Devil's Thumb Fire
Publication Type: News 07/06/2023

Yesterday’s rain helped to raise fuel moisture levels, and fire activity was minimal. Fire size is estimated at 95 acres with 10% containment. Steep, rocky terrain with sometimes chest-high blow-down is slowing progress for crews on the ground.

Firefighters working on containment lines will face hazards including falling rocks and dangerous fire-weakened trees. Crews will be working on securing the perimeter of the fire through the construction of direct and indirect handlines.

There is two Type II crews, two Hotshot crews, one engine, one ambulance, and four helicopters working the fire at this time.

Trail closures are still anticipated. Road barricades are in place at the boundaries of James Peak Protection Area on FSR 128 (Water Board Road) to prevent traffic in the Devil’s Thumb Trailhead area.

As operations are ongoing, the public is asked to avoid areas near the fire for public and firefighter safety. There are currently no evacuations in place.
