The Rock Rabbit fire is burning the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness approximately 4.5 miles to the northeast of Big Creek. It is at 38.5 acres and is a fire ignited by the August 22, 2022 thunderstorms that passed over the area.

The fire was noticed soon after the thunderstorm and aerial reconnaissance showed the fire likely to be out.  On September 4th, the fire flared up and is being managed under a Point/Zone Protection strategy to allow for wildfire to play its natural role with the ecosystem.  Limited values of risk have been identified at this time, other than the Rock Rabbit Lookout tower that has been wrapped for its protection.

No area or trail closure is expected, but the fire is on the Ramey Ridge Trail 006 where it intersects with the Rock Rabbit Trail 008 which is a primary route into Chamberlain Basin.  The Beaver Creek Trail 016 that had been closed for bridge replacement is now open and is another route that can be used to reach Chamberlain Basin.
The fire has a low potential for spread as of September 13th, given forecasted weather conditions.
