Borrega Fire Morning Update 4/02/2022

Important – Drones are prohibited in the fire vicinity & have the potential to shut down all operations. 

 Location: Approximately 10 miles west of Kingsville, Texas 
 Size: 51,566 acres      
 Containment: 85%   
 Current Resources: 104 

 Current Status: Yesterday at approximately 2:00 pm, a contingent of initial attack resources responded to a new fire start a mile north of the Borrega Fire. Due to this quick response, they were able to contain the fire at three acres.  State and local resources observed minimal fire activity in the overnight hours as they continued strengthening control lines and monitoring fire activity. Crews will continue to work throughout the day to achieve complete containment of the fire. 
 
Planned Actions: As of this morning, there are a total of 104 state and federal personnel assigned, including 7 bulldozers, 22 fire engines and 2 aircraft supporting the incident. Texas A&M Forest Service is working in conjunction with Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System (TIFMAS), and local fire departments from within Kleberg County and nearby mutual aid. Today the staffing levels will be right sized to reflect current fire needs and to allow personnel and equipment to be available for new fires should they occur.
 
Weather & Fuel Conditions: Winds this morning will be light and variable, then shifting to a northeast wind this afternoon with speeds of 10 mph, shifting to the east late in the day. Relative humidity values will decrease to around 40% by 4 PM. Tonight, relative humidity levels are predicted to increase to 100%, further reducing fire activity.  Starting Sunday there will be a return to critical fire weather conditions.

Resources Threatened: There are currently no resources threatened.

Closures: Voluntary evacuations have been lifted in Kleberg County for the Ricardo and Riviera communities, as well as the King Ranch Gas Plant. 

Incident Overview: The Borrega fire started on March 30th and Texas A&M Forest Service received a request for assistance from Kleberg County at approximately 4:30 pm. The request for assistance came from Kleberg County for Texas A&M Forest Service resource support with the fire located 10 miles south of Kingsville and east of Premont. Unified command has been established to assist with containment and suppression efforts.
