Current Situation: Fire crews in Waldo Lake Wilderness completed one half mile of fireline to the west primarily using water from small streams. Two additional hotshot crews were inserted in the wilderness to assist in constructing this key piece of handline. Heavy equipment continued building direct fireline to the east from Koch Road toward the wilderness with a goal of joining both the hand and equipment lines. Timber sawyers continued cutting hazard trees along Black Creek Road making it safer for firefighters and heavy equipment to continue fire suppression operations. Helicopters were actively supporting fire crews with bucket drops to cool the fire along the southern and southeastern flanks. About four miles of handline construction on Fuji Mountain Trail is completed. Heavy equipment crews continued improving Eagle Creek Road (#5853) as an alternate fireline. Heavy equipment operators completed much of the alternate fireline on Forest Road #1928 and moved equipment out of Huckleberry Flats OHV recreation area. Firefighters improved Forest Road #2023, just west of the fire’s edge to support containment efforts. On the 8.7-acre Slapjack Fire, crews have been mopping up throughout the fire perimeter. 

Today’s Activities: Today begins a transition in weather to cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity which should slow fire activity. Helicopters will support fire crews in suppression operations with bucket drops and logistical needs with sling-loading equipment and gear. Three fire crews in Waldo Lake Wilderness will continue constructing direct fireline along the southeastern flank. Heavy equipment continues to build fireline from Koch Road to the east toward the Wilderness boundary. Timber fallers and heavy equipment will stay ahead of fire crews removing hazard trees from Black Creek Road. On the Slapjack fire, crews will continue mop up and gridding the fireline. When mopping up, firefighters use hand tools and water to mix dirt, cooling hot embers near the line. To detect any unseen heat remaining, firefighters pass over the area of loose dirt with the back of their bare hand, then work the area again until it is cooled.    

Huckleberry Flats OHV Park is open today from both the north and south entrances.  

Evacuations: Currently, there are no evacuations in place.

Weather: Cooler weather and higher relative humidity today should moderate fire activity.    

Closures: An expanded Area Closure is in place as of August 23rd for the Cedar Creek Fire. This includes all trailheads and dispersed camping west and north of Waldo Lake. The lake, campgrounds, and trails (including the PCT) on the east side remain open. A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place.

Restrictions: Fire restrictions are in place on the Willamette National Forest with the exception of the Three Sisters, Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Washington, Waldo Lake, and Diamond Peak Wilderness areas.
