Deep Fire Update August 28, 2023

Deep Fire
Publication Type: News 08/29/2023

CURRENT SITUATION
The Deep Fire is currently mapped at 3,852 acres and is 58% contained.

Minor additional growth was observed yesterday as the fire continued to back into Little Salt Creek. This steep drainage is inaccessible to firefighters, and aircraft was used to slow the spread. Should the fire cross Little Salt Creek, it would run into rock, and therefore doesn’t pose threat to containment. However, crews are continuing line construction north along the Stuart Fork to ensure that should the fire build momentum it is unable to cross the Stuart Fork. The Deer Creek Trail has been identified as a good holding feature, and firefighters are positioning themselves to continue containment efforts there should it become necessary.

Isolated heat sources are apparent throughout the fire area, even as firefighters mop up as far within the perimeter as is safe. Fire-weakened trees continue to fall and roll down steep slopes, occasionally igniting previously unburned vegetation. Aircraft is being utilized to help cool down any interior hot spots that firefighters can’t reach. There is still significant risk to firefighters and the public inside the fire perimeter, and a Forest Closure remains in place.

WEATHER
The weather today is expected to trend slightly cooler as a weak system moves in from the ocean. Winds from the north/northeast could become gusty in the afternoon.
