Fire The Great Lakes fire remains at 32,400 acres with containment up to 40%. Another round of rainfall kept fire activity suppressed, and this will continue through Sunday due to rain and storms in the forecast. Due to deep organic material within the fire area, there remains the need for sustained efforts to ensure active burning does not reoccur.
Great Lakes Fire Daily Update, April 28, 2023   Fire personnel held a community meeting last night. This meeting was recorded and will be posted on the N.C. Forest Service YouTube Channel.  
Fire The Great Lakes fire remains at 32400 acres with 30% containment. Due to area rainfall into this morning, no significant fire activity has occurred. Any notable fire growth is not expected due to a chance of rain once again Sunday. Due to deep organic material within the fire area, there remains the need for sustained efforts to ensure active burning does not reoccur.

Any notable fire growth is not expected due to a chance of rain through Sunday. Smoke With reduced fire activity, any minor smoke should remain confined to local areas along the HWY 17 corridor to the fire perimeter, and along the HWY 70 corridor from west of New Bern to the Havelock area.

General Wildfire Smoke and Air Quality Information and Safety Tips Wildfire smoke produced by the Great Lakes Fire in the Croatan National Forest may continue to affect air quality in the days and possibly weeks to come or longer.  The levels of smoke and geographical areas the smoke affects will vary and can change quickly with fire conditions and weather conditions.  It is possible residents in some areas will not see smoke at all while people in other areas will.
