Cooks Peak Fire Final Update

Update: 5/13/2022

 

Fire Update:  The Cooks Peak Fire is expected to be 100% contained by this evening, Friday, May 13.   The Type 3 Incident Management Team that has been managing the fire will transition to a local Type 4 organization.  Most resources will be demobilized following this week’s wind events but approximately 20 firefighters will continue to patrol, monitor and mop up heat.  Today and tomorrow, forecasts call for calmer winds but continued dry air.  The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch in northeastern NM today.  Smoke from the Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon Fire will likely continue to in the Cooks Peak Fire area.  

 

This will be the final update for the fire. The specially designated phone line and email for this incident will be disconnected and all fire inquiries can be sent to the Las Vegas District Office of the NM Division of Forestry at 505-425-7472.  Posts on rehabilitation activities will be made to Facebook.com/CooksPeakFireInfo in the future.

Fire Prevention: With historic levels of fire danger, preventing wildfires critical. Please be prepared for your outdoor activities and always carry a fire extinguisher and shovel in your vehicle.

 

Fire Restrictions: The New Mexico State Forester has implemented statewide fire restrictions.  Smoking, fireworks, campfires, open burning and open fires are prohibited.   Mora County residents previously in the Cooks Peak Fire evacuation footprint may now be under Calf Canyon/Hermit’s Peak evacuation status. Set! Go! program for evacuation status that provides information on evacuation and evacuation preparation.
