Fire Update:  A Red Flag Warning is forecasted today until 9pm and Thursday from 9am-8pm.  Afternoon winds are expected to be 20-35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.   Thursday, humidity is forecasted to be in the single digits and winds 15-30mph with gusts around 40mph.  Despite the strong winds and dry conditions, Cooks Peak Fire has held at 97% containment and 59,359 acres.  Interior pockets of fuel may continue to burn down and smoke would be visible but the fire is not actively spreading. Smoke may be visible as fuels continue to burn down but the fire is not actively spreading.  Crews will patrol and mop up along existing firelines and continue suppression repair work.  Crews will closely watch and hold all lines as strong winds can carry hot embers across. 

 

Resource specialists continue to assess completed work and identify additional rehabilitation needed.  A group of incident resources will continue to support local resources with any new starts that may occur in the vicinity of the fire. There are 83 personnel assigned to the incident. Most resources have been demobilized or recommitted to other fires.

Fire Prevention: With historic levels of fire danger, preventing wildfires critical. Please be prepared for your outdoor activities and always carry a fire extinguisher and shovel in your vehicle.

 

Fire Restrictions: The New Mexico State Forester has implemented statewide fire restrictions.  Smoking, fireworks, campfires, open burning and open fires are prohibited.   Mora County residents previously in the Cooks Peak Fire evacuation footprint may now be under Calf Canyon/Hermit’s Peak evacuation status.
