Indian Ridge fire Update 8/17/2022

Indian Ridge
Publication Type: News 08/17/2022

The lightning-caused Indian Ridge Fire burning in the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness in Idaho since July 7th, has grown to approximately 4,000 acres. The fire has been active this week primarily along the western and northern flanks, north of Indian Creek. The fire is burning in very steep, rugged, and remote terrain with heavy surface fuels and dead standing timber making access for firefighters difficult and dangerous.

Fire managers are utilizing a point protection strategy to prevent any critical wilderness infrastructure from being negatively impacted by the fire. Yesterday the fire moved closer to Paradise Road prompting firefighters to take protection actions around the Indian Creek Campground, which is currently closed for public safety. Crews wrapped signs and tables with flame resistant foil and installed sprinklers on the road bridge. Today, crews are finishing their work at Indian Creek and starting to implement protection actions on the Spot Mountain bridge and stock ramp. Last night the fire again crossed Indian Creek and made a large run to the south near Nick Wynn Mountain. Fire managers expect the fire to reach Paradise Road and Indian Creek Campground in the next day or two.

As the fire moves closer to Paradise Road, there may be temporary road closures later this week including a barricade and road guard at Magruder Crossing. There is also a highway reader board at the junction of Nez Perce Road and West Fork Highway alerting motorists to any delays/closures. The area/trail closure implemented last week, remains unchanged. The fire is still five miles from the Idaho/Montana border and is approximately 30 miles southwest of Darby. Smoke may be visible south of Hamilton, primarily around Darby.
