CURRENT SITUATION

The current storm brought wetting rain showers overnight, with storm totals ranging from 0.75 to 2-inches over the fire area thus far. Despite the continued precipitation, lingering areas of heat remain in pockets of smoldering heavy fuels and places such as stump holes. Rain showers are expected to continue throughout the day, with the potential of isolated thunderstorms. A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for the fire area with a possibility of ash and debris flows associated with thunderstorms. The cooler temperatures and high humidity will continue to give firefighters the opportunity to gain ground on the containment of the Mosquito Fire.

On Monday, a large number of evacuation orders were lifted in both Placer and El Dorado counties as the fire continued to hold within its existing containment lines on the southern and western flanks. Several areas remain under evacuation orders due to their proximity to the fire and ongoing safety concerns, which firefighters and cooperators are working diligently to mitigate. Unified Command and cooperators meet daily to ensure that everything is being done to return all evacuees to their homes as soon as possible.

Throughout this storm, firefighters remain in the communities continuing to patrol areas with existing containment lines for any potential issues. Crews are also aggressively engaging in building direct control lines along the fire's edge. This weather event has given firefighters a great opportunity to knock out the fire while it is down. Adding containment to the fire's eastern flank has become the priority, which is no easy task in rugged terrain, especially with the rainy weather. The multiple river canyons remain challenging for firefighters to safely access and build control lines. Access to portions of the fireline has become compromised with the significant amount of rain received. Due to muddy conditions, many dirt roads that crews use to access the fire's edge cannot be used. Firefighters will continue looking for opportunities around the fire, especially on the eastern front, to continue constructing and securing direct control lines ahead of a warming and drying weather trend forecasted to start this Thursday.
