CURRENT SITUATION:

Areas of heat were noted south of Callahan along the line and around previously reported spot fires, continuing the threat to the town of Callahan. Heavier smoke from the Monument and McCash Fires shaded the sun in this area, decreasing fire behavior and allowing existing dozer lines to be improved. In the area south of Blue Jay Ridge to Sugar Hill good progress was made improving lines, allowing some small backfiring operations. Clear skies along the eastern flank of the fire increased fire activity including multiple group tree torching as well as a few crown runs. The clearer skies allowed for continued use of air assets in this area. Fixed wing and rotor aircraft were able to apply retardant to the ridge between Stoddard Meadow and Eagle Creek. Construction of contingency dozer lines east and north of Highway 3 continued. One crew remains on the Cronan fire removing suppression equipment. With the completion of control lines along Hwy 93 in the area of Cecilville, the Cecilville Spike Camp has been closed and crews transferred to the base in Etna. These crews will now focus on higher priority areas, such as Callahan.

Fire crews are securing and strengthening existing lines in advance of the expected cold front moving in on Saturday. That front will be preceded on Friday by southwesterly wind gusts of 20-30 mph.
