The Margaret Fire was detected by Baptiste Lookout on August 22, 2022 (correction from the original reporting stating the fire was detected by aircraft). The wildfire is burning on the ridge north of Margaret Lake, it is on the upper third of the slope on steep rocky terrain.

As of September 23, rain totals over the fire amounted to 0.98 inches and fire activity is primarily smoldering. The minimal fire activity is along the Forest Creek Road (FS Road 895E). On the Forest Creek side the fire continues to creep to the south and east towards old cutting units; these units appear to be acting as a barrier to fire spread. On the north side, above Graves Bay, the fire has backed to within 15 feet of the West Side Reservoir Road (FS 895). Fire personnel have been in the area every day to continue assessing fire growth in relation to values at risk and update public information.

Given the fire location, steep rocky terrain, and limited access, the strategy will be point protection of values at risk. An official Area, Road, and Trail Closure has been posted effective 9/9/2022. Hungry Horse Ranger District will continue to patrol this fire from the ground and air, keep the public informed on changes in fire activity, and evaluate the need for additional trail, road, and area closures.
