Colony Fire August 5, 2022 2:30pm Update

Size: 467 acres
Containment: 75%
Cause: Under Investigation
Start Date: August 3, 2022

Current Situation
Resources are working around the fire searching for any heat and fire within 100 feet of the fire's edge. Anything that is found is being mopped-up to prevent any threat of the fire jumping outside of the dozer lines. Mopping up consists of firefighters using a combination of water and hand tools to first soak down an area, mix it up with their hand tools, and then soak the area down again. They will repeat this process until that spot is cold to the touch with their bare hands. This process takes time and hard work but it helps ensure that this fire will not escape it's boundaries. Because of how much resources this process takes it is not feasible to put out the entire 467 acres, instead focusing their efforts on the perimeter stops further growth. This does allow areas inside the fire area to continue burning and consume all of the present fuels. This process is normal and expected, removing built up brush and vegetation that fuels wildfires. Resources will be on scene until they are confident that the entire perimeter is secure and not going to grow any more.

Smoke will continue to be seen in the area as pockets of heat inside the lines continue to burn. These pockets don't present a threat to the line and will continue to smolder until they are burned up. Resources will secure all edges of the fire before they release the incident. Smokes may still rise in the area and residents should not be alarmed unless they see a new smoke in a different area, this ensures resources are available for new fire starts.
