Firefighters Taking Advantage of Decreased Fire Activity

Sugarloaf Fire
Publication Type: News 07/29/2022

Current Situation: On Wednesday, a second day of minimal fire activity allowed firefighters to complete direct handline from Cow Creek, along the northern edge of the perimeter, to the eastern edge of the fire. A helicopter assisted handcrews with water drops in areas where pockets of residual heat remained along the line. Following an overnight flight, the size of the fire has been updated to 510 acres and remains 0% contained. The increase in acreage is a combination of the small amount of growth over the last 24 hours and better mapping from the overnight infrared flight.

Today, crews will begin extending indirect handline from the northeast corner of the fire perimeter to the east where it will be tied into an existing two-track road. Bulldozers are working to improve the two-track road that extends from the east side of the fire to the south and around to the west where it meets Cow Creek. Firefighters are also clearing vegetation along Cow Creek, on the west side of the fire area, in preparation for potential firing operations in the future, if they are needed and when conditions allow.

Engines assigned to the structure protection group continue to assess and prepare properties along the Bear Creek corridor.

Weather & Fuel Conditions: Overnight, the fire area received some rain from thunderstorms, potentially up to .10 of an inch. Today, chances for showers and thunderstorms will increase through the day and into the evening. High temperatures will be in the low 70’s with humidity levels increasing from a low of 40% to 90% overnight. Low temperatures will be in the 50’s.

Evacuations: An evacuation notice is in place for Bear Creek Road between the Garrett intersection and Friend Park. Pre-evacuation for Friend Park, and Fetterman to Garrett Ranch. The American Red Cross shelter in Rock River has been closed. If you are evacuating the Sugarloaf Fire area and need assistance with temporary housing, please contact Albany County Emergency Management at (307) 721-1815 or (307) 721-1896.

Fire Restrictions: Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are in effect for the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and the Thunder Basin National Grassland https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd1045796.pdf

Temporary Flight Restrictions: A TFR is in place over the fire area. This restricts aircraft, including drones, from entering the area without permission. Please remember; If you fly, we can’t!
