Chalk Mountain Fire Update

July 31, 2022 10:00 a.m.

Chalk Mountain Fire Stats:

Size: 6,755 Acres

Containment: 83%

Location: 4.6 miles SW of Glen Rose, TX

Start Date: July 18, 2022

Cause: Under Investigation

Total Resources Assigned: 250

The Southern Area Blue Type-I Incident Management Team assumed command of the Chalk Mountain Fire at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20, 2022.

Current Status:

Fire officials report additional progress on the Chalk Mountain Fire as the total containment increased to 83 percent. A total of nine acres was added to the perimeter due to a flareup that occurred two nights ago near the fireline. Firefighters spent yesterday working the hot spot and no visible smoke was observed by the afternoon.

Across the remainder of the fire, two small flareups occurred within the interior of the fire, and crews will continue mopping up these areas into today. Firefighters will use dozers to create paths for engines to access any additional flareups that might occur.

For today, ground crews will continue gridding and searching for additional hotspots across the fire. Fire officials are reporting that some hotspots located by crews are so small that the heat signatures are not being picked up by infrared flights. Because of this, crews will continue to grid and search for hotspots until full containment is achieved.

Fire Weather:

Hot and dry conditions will continue today with temperatures for the Chalk Mountain Fire expected to reach 103 degrees, with relative humidity falling to nearly 20 percent. Winds will be out of the south at 10 mph with gusts up to 15 mph. Wetting rain is not expected in the region today.
