Chalk Mountain Fire Update

July 30, 2022 10:00 a.m.

Chalk Mountain Fire Stats:

Size: 6,746 Acres

Containment: 78%

Location: 4.6 miles SW of Glen Rose, TX

Start Date: July 18, 2022

Cause: Under Investigation

Total Resources Assigned: 270

The Southern Area Blue, Type-I Incident Management Team assumed command of the Chalk Mountain Fire at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20, 2022.

Current Status:

Containment of the Chalk Mountain Fire currently stands at 78 percent as crews close in on full containment of the fire. For several days, fire officials have noted that even though progress is being made, there is still potential for reburn due to isolated pockets of heat intermixed with strands of timber. Early this morning, an area previously showing no heat flared up and burned approximately 4-5 acres of unburned fuel within the fire area. This illustrates the reason for the abundance of caution by fire officials and why firefighters continue gridding and searching for hotspots despite minimal activity over the previous days. With assistance from a dozer, firefighters were able to line the flareup and will continue working the hotspot this morning.

Across the remainder of the fire, ground crews will continue using a grid pattern to search for and extinguish remaining hotspots. Some resource demobilization is occurring, with many of these crews being made available for reassignment or initial attack.

Fire Weather:

Thunderstorms were in the vicinity of the Chalk Mountain Fire Friday afternoon. While isolated pockets of heavy rain was received in some areas (including the Incident Command Post), little to no rain occurred over the fire. Gusty winds of up to 35 mph did contribute to flareups across the Chalk Mountain Fire. Today will be hot and dry again, with a high of 104 degrees. The minimum relative humidity will be nearly 25 percent, with southern winds blowing at 10 mph and gusting to 15 mph. A frontal boundary is expected to remain stalled over north Texas which will promote the formation of afternoon showers and thunderstorms.
