Simms Fire Update
Tuesday, May 31, 2022 – 9:00am

Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests
Type 4 Incident Management Team
Patrick Blair, Incident Commander

Final Update:
We would like to thank you for following the progress of the Simms Fire. Due to the optimal condition of the fire area, this will be the final update for this incident.

Current Situation:
The Simms Fire acreage is currently 313 acres with 100% containment. An infrared (IR) flight was performed on Monday. The flight did not identify any hot spots near the perimeter of the fire. Crews continue to cut and hand pile limbs and timber for landowners affected by the fire. The excavator continues to work its way around the perimeter of the fire. It will continue repairing dozer line around the heel of the fire today. Crews are close to completing fence line repair work. Suppression repair work is expected to continue throughout this week. It is estimated to take approximately three more days to complete.

Due to favorable weather conditions and the condition of the burn area, the Type 3 Incident Management Team transitioned management of the fire to Type 4 local resources this morning at 6:00am. Many of the personnel on the Type 3 team call this area home and will continue working on the Simms Fire. Two twenty-person hand crews, an engine crew, and a heavy equipment crew remain on scene.

Safety: Careful consideration for public and firefighter safety remains the top priority on this incident. There are no formal road closures, but firefighters request that the public avoid the fire affected area out of respect for community and firefighter safety.

Weather & Fuel Conditions: Temperatures will remain low today ranging in the low to mid 60’s. Winds will increase this afternoon with gusts up to 25 mph. Humidity will remain higher between 12-17%. Wednesday and Thursday will bring some relief from the wind. We can expect continued dry weather and warmer temperatures as the week progresses. Winds will increase on Friday and continue throughout the weekend.

Evacuations and Fire Restrictions: There are no evacuation orders in place. For more information contact https://ouraycountyco.gov/272/Emergency-Management.
