Containment:
4%
Start Date:
April 12, 2022
Location/Origin

Highlights: The following areas are now on a SET status evacuation notice: Loma Grande Area – South of Nogal Canyon from Pfingsten Road to Crockett Canyon Trail and from Crockett Canyon Trail west to Nogal Canyon Road.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect until 9 p.m. tonight due to predicted high winds.

A Virtual Public Meeting will be held Saturday at 6pm on Facebook. Questions can be submitted in advance by email or through Facebook messaging.

Operations: Today, firefighters extinguished multiple heat sources in lower Nogal Canyon to protect values at risk and secure the perimeter around homes. Work to secure the perimeter in the higher, rugged canyon country is ongoing. The Nogal Canyon Fire has been active on the east side as a result of strong winds from the west, with highly visible smoke. Crews and helicopters coordinated water drops to slow fire growth to the east and northeast. Strong winds grounded helicopter operations in the afternoon.

Evacuations: All of Nogal Canyon remains in evacuation status. As soon as it is safe for the public to re-enter the fire area, an update will be posted. Prepare yourself and your family with a go-bag. Visit ready.gov for more information on evacuation preparation. Due to evacuations, Lincoln County Mercantile is offering to help owners of animals that are being housed at the Capitan Fairgrounds. Contact the manager at 575-354-4260.

Restrictions/Closures: Nogal Canyon is closed. Set Status for the Loma Grande Area – see area details above.

A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place: Wildfires are a NO Drone Zone. Flying recreational and media drones within a TFR is illegal and endangers aircraft working on the fire. Drones found in the fire area will result in fire aviation operations being suspended until the area is cleared. If you see drones in the fire area, please report it immediately to law enforcement and the Incident Management Team. If You Fly, We Can’t!

Weather: Tonight - mostly clear with temperatures 44-46 degrees. Winds from the West are expected to be 6-15 mph with gusts up to 28 mph.

Smoke: Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory problems or heart disease are encouraged to take precautionary measures.

Structures burned: 6 primary, 8 outbuildings
