Forest Service to conduct prescribed burn March 3 in Alleghany CO

GWJ National Forest Prescribed Burns
Publication Type: News 03/03/2022

Location: The northern 40-acre sub-unit of the Tri-County prescribed burn unit includes portions of Green Pastures Recreation Area and is located two tenths of a mile southeast of I-64 in Alleghany County.

Date and Time: The Forest Service and Virginia Department of Conservation, Douthat State Park plan to begin ignitions on March 3, 2022, if weather conditions are appropriate. This prescribed burn will be completed in one day. Firefighters will continue to monitor the area for several days after the burn.

Objective:  This project will improve wildlife habitat by restoring open woodlands and grasslands to the forest landscape and reduce hazardous fuels.

Additional Information:  The burn area runs directly adjacent to Green Pastures Recreation Area. Portions of North Mountain Trail (Forest Trail 467) and Tri County Road (Forest Road 271) may be temporarily closed. The prescribed burn is expected to have lingering smoke effects in the Longdale Furnace area, on the Longdale Furnace Road (State Route 269), and along the I-64 corridor.  Caution should be used traveling along Tri-County Road (Forest Road 271) to ensure fire fighter and public safety. Residents and travelers in this area will likely see or smell smoke. For your safety and the safety of firefighters, please drive slowly and use caution.
