News – 11/23/2021

Fire crews successfully burned 77 acres around the Dunewood Campground near Beverly Shores, and another 25 acres just south of Dune Acres today.

Fifteen firefighters began ignitions at the Dunewood Campground at 11am this morning. For approximately 2 and a half hours, staff safely burned downed leaves and other natural debris around the campgrounds 53 traditional campsites and 13 walk-in sites. Burning the leaves in the fall reduces the threat of wildfire in the spring and summer camping season at the campground.  From April until November, the campground is full on most weekends, and almost continuously through the summer. https://www.nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htm

At a little after 2 pm, firefighters ignited the Cowles Bog 25 acre fire along North Mineral Springs Road, immediately north of the Greenbelt Trailhead parking lot, south of Dune Acres. The Cowles Bog area is named after Dr. Henry Chandler Cowles who did his pioneering work in ecology and ecological succession here. The area is undergoing restoration efforts, which include the use of fire on the south side of the bog, the area burned today, and in the dunes north of the bog. More information on the Cowles Bog restoration can be found here: https://www.nps.gov/indu/learn/nature/great-marsh-restoration.htm .
