EUREKA, Calif. – Yesterday, an infrared flight mapped the fire at 69,725 acres. The fire grew 10,049 acres over the last two days and remains at 15 percent containment. Great Basin Team 7 has command of the Little Marble Fire, which started on Monday, September 6th as well as the McCash Fire.
Firefighters are looking at additional contingency lines to protect Happy Camp should the fire move in that direction. Firefighters continue working along Elk Creek Road and Highway 96. Yesterday, taking advantage of clearer air, helicopters were able to drop buckets of water on the north side of the fire. Firefighters continue preparing a contingency line along the Iron Phone Road and Camp Three Road to hold the fire if it starts to move southwest.
Attempts were made to insert smokejumpers to engage the Little Marble Fire, but poor visibility made it unsafe to do so. The fire is located west of the Pacific Crest Trail on top of a ridge and is 12 acres. A local fire crew is hiking into the fire this morning.
Forecasts show this morning will be warm and gusty until mid-afternoon when a storm system is expected to pass south and east of the fire. Storms could bring downdraft winds and isolated thunderstorms that could increase fire behavior.
