EUREKA, Calif. – Yesterday, the southerly flow brought winds that stoked the fire, pushing it northward. A daytime infrared flight mapped the fire at 59,049 acres and despite the growth containment held at 15 percent.

The fire was most active near Buckhorn Mountain and pushed north towards Huckleberry Mountain into the 2014 Frying Pan burn scar. Firefighters were able to hold the fire along Elk Creek Road where Smith River and Chena Hotshots conducted firing operations the last couple of days. Firefighters will continue to engage the fire where it is safe to do so and reinforce contingency lines.

Fire activity did pick up near Wooley Creek, primarily moving northward. A new fire unrelated to McCash, started west of the Pacific Crest Trail near Marble Valley and was estimated at 2 acres.

The Highway 96 Structure Group continues mitigation work and patrolling the highway corridor. The Elk Creek Structure Group continues to assist homeowners in creating defensible space.

Meteorologists expect temperatures to cool to the low 80s and humidity to increase, which should moderate fire activity and assist firefighting efforts.
