Harris Mountain Wildfire
News – 8/7/2021

The Harris Mountain Fire is currently 31,546 acres and 40% contained. The 17% increase in containment comes from firefighter efforts extending secure fireline from Soldier Creek west to Bird Creek and also in the area of Sheep Creek Lane.

As of August 6th, Evacuation Orders have been rescinded for Austin Lane, Sheep Creek Lane and Sheep Creek Road. Per the Cascade County Sheriff’s Office, residents may return to these locations. As a reminder, evacuations are officially ordered by the local Sheriff’s Office, please call them with any questions pertaining to evacuations. In the event additional evacuations are put into place, deputies will be dispatched to the area to notify residents and emergency notifications will be sent via phone if you have signed up for Code Red (Cascade County) or Smart 911 (Lewis & Clark County).

Current and Planned Activity

There was little fire movement yesterday; however, helicopters did assist with fire flare ups on the north east side and south end of the fire. Crews began to construct fireline directly on the fire’s edge near Frank’s Ridge on the south side of the fire addressing recent fire activity. Resources from the Harris Mountain Fire assisted local volunteer firefighters and Montana DNRC with initial attack response in the Stickney Creek area; the fire start was successfully suppressed.

Today, two hotshot crews will work on the south side of the fire constructing handline along the edge and working west. Firefighters are actively engaging on the fire edge east of Stickney Creek to construct handline in attempt to secure the west edge of the fire. Installation of hoses and sprinklers along roads and bridges is ongoing to protect infrastructure from potential fire impacts east of Stickney Creek. Firefighters working in the north near Harris Mountain will continue to monitor and patrol the fire perimeter addressing areas of heat along the edge to further secure the fire line. On the eastern portion of the fire, crews will patrol and monitor the secure fireline working to extinguish areas of heat within the fire perimeter.

Weather: Temperatures will be warmer today 84-87 degrees F and partly cloudy. Winds will be out of the west at 10-15 mph with gusts up to 28 mph in the afternoon.

Evacuation Orders are still in place for residents living on Adel Road south of the intersection with the West Hound Creek Road as well as Cannon Lake Lane. Pre-Evacuation Notices are still in place for Novak Creek Lane.

Approximately 60 residences have been affected by evacuation orders and notifications. The Montana Red Cross evacuation center is located at the Cascade School. Families can also request Red Cross Services by calling 800-272-6668.
