WEST ZONE UPDATE

Yesterday

In the northernmost area of the fire, crews found new hot spots inside the containment line with fire creeping in the fresh needlecast. They extinguished these hotspots to keep the fire inside the line. Elsewhere, crews deconstructed fireline berms, restored firelines to pre-fire contours, and chipped and dispersed downed vegetation to cover bare soil. Sawyers, firefighters, and heavy equipment operators completed more fire suppression repair near Silver Lake, the Bogard areas of Lassen National Forest, and in areas of Lassen Volcanic National Park. The hazard tree group worked along County Road A21 and the Highway 36 corridors.

Today

Heavy equipment operators, sawyers/fallers, and fire crews will continue suppression repair work. Five new working groups have been identified, in addition to the hazard tree group. Some of these groups will work along the A21 corridor, in and around Bogard, and along Forest Service Road 10. Others will be assigned to the areas around Silver Lake or will be moved to areas west of County Road A21, as needed. Crews will continue to identify fire-weakened, damaged trees that may pose a risk to drivers and recreational visitors. Please be alert while traveling in these areas and give crews the room they need to complete their work.

There are still firefighters designated to respond to new fire starts within the areas outside of the Dixie Fire, should the need arise.

Weather

Highs are forecast to be in the low 40s with afternoon humidity around 25%. Predicted winds will be northerly, shifting to northeast at 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Similar wind speeds and humidities are forecast for Tuesday.

In Lassen Volcanic National Park, 8 miles of the park highway from the southwest entrance and 1 mile from the northwest entrance are open. The highway remains closed elsewhere in the park. For more information visit: https://www.nps.gov/lavo/learn/nature/dixie-fire.htm
