Leland Complex Update 8/1/21

Leland Complex Wildfire
News – 8/1/2021

Leland Complex                 As predicted, both fires in the complex had thunderstorms move through last night with the first measurable precipitation since the fires started on July 7th. Today crews will cautiously assess the situation before re engaging the fire. While the rain was a welcome event, the potential for injury has increased with slippery conditions and unstable standing timber. The safety record for this complex has been impeccable and the priority for safety for all will remain number one. Sand Mountain Fire Yesterday the fire was active in areas along the fire’s southern edge. Firefighters were successful in bringing water to the fire edge using tanks, hose lays, sprinklers, and pumps. Helicopter water drops supported ground efforts when fire behavior or terrain made ground attack unsafe. Today reinforcing fireline along the southeast corner of the fire’s edge will continue as well as mop up, monitor, and patrol operations along Palouse River Drive and Big Sand Road.   Johnson Creek Fire Fire crews held and improved handlines on the northern edge of the fire as scouting for opportunities to directly engage along Shite Creek continues. Helicopter water drops helped check the fire’s spread. Today firefighters will construct and improve handlines in the Shite Creek drainage. Fire officials will be at the Elk River City Hall (12:30-1:30pm) come down and join us for a cup of coffee and a chat with our IC, Mike McManus.
Stage 2 Fire Restrictions are in effect for North Idaho from the Payette River north to the Canadian border. Details can be found:   Closures: USDA Forest Service has modified the area closures associated with both fires in the Leland Complex. While area closures have been lifted, road and trail closures remain in effect. The public is reminded to adhere to all posted signs and barricades. Violation is not only illegal but also exposes firefighters and the public to avoidable risk. Please respect closures and barricades!
