Weather Helps Slow Spread of Morgan Creek Fire
Current Situation: The Morgan Creek Fire was reported on July 9 on the Routt National Forest 15 miles north of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The fire started south of the Hinman Campground and spread over the subsequent days south-southeast towards and into the Mt. Zirkel Wilderness. Both air and ground firefighting resources have steadily increased in number in recent days in an effort to contain the fire. At 6 a.m. Wednesday morning, command of the Morgan Creek Fire transitioned from a Type 3 Incident Management Team to Rocky Mountain Area Type 2 Incident Management Team, Team Black.
On Wednesday, crews will be continuing work that began over the weekend to establish containment line around the fire’s perimeter. In Division A on the north and east sides of the fire, crews will continue looking for opportunities to put line in along the north edge to connect established line to areas with the Burn Ridge fire scar. On the south side of the fire in Division X, crews will be constructing line from Wapiti Ranch to Big Creek where the fire slowed along a ridge. On the west side of the fire in Division Z, crews will be working southward towards crews constructing line in Division X. Crews in all divisions will be supported by three Type 1 helicopters and two Type 3 helicopters, as needed.
Weather & Fuel Conditions: Precipitation occurred over areas of the fire on Tuesday, which tempered fire behavior. On Wednesday, temperatures are expected to be 76-81 degrees with isolated thunderstorms in the morning, then scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Winds will be out of the west at 4-8 mph with gusts up to 20 mph if thunderstorms develop. Humidity is expected to be 23-28% throughout the day.
Closures and Evacuations: A forest closure order remains in effect for areas near the Morgan Creek Fire including the many areas in the Seedhouse recreation corridor and the Mt. Zirkel Wilderness Area. The Routt County Sheriff’s Office issued a voluntary pre-evacuation notice for residents near the fire on July 9. That pre-evacuation notice remains in effect and more information is available on the Routt County Current Evacuation Notices Map. Parts of County Road 64, also known as the Seedhouse Road, as well as other roads in the closure area remain closed to entry for public and firefighter safety. A section of the Continental Divide Trail is closed and hikers are being routed along State Route 129 around the fire area. More information is available on the Continental Divide Trail Coalition website.
Air Quality: The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for wildfire smoke for Routt, Jackson, Grand, and other western slope counties due to wildfire smoke from the Morgan Creek Fire and other fires throughout the west. More information on the health advisory can be found on the CDPHE smoke website. The National Weather Service has a smoke tracker available online to see near-surface smoke throughout the western US.
Temporary Flight Restrictions: A Temporary Flight Restriction is in place over the Morgan Creek Fire. Wildfires are a No Drone Zone. If you fly, we can’t. Whenever a drone is spotted near the fire all aircraft are grounded until we can be sure the drone is clear of the area. For more information, visit http://knowbeforeyoufly.org.
