September 3, 2021 Burnt Peak and South Yaak Fires

Burnt Peak Fire Wildfire
News – 9/3/2021

The Burnt Peak and South Yaak Fires remain unchanged in acreage burned and percent containment over the past couple days - Burnt Peak: 4,097 acres and 41% containment; South Yaak: 12,371 acres and 74% containment.

Current and Planned Activity

Firefighting operations are based on current and expected fire activity. Fire weather and modeling forecasts minimal creeping and smoldering with limited growth and occasional smoke from isolated pockets of heat within the interior of the fire perimeters.

Crews on both fires are repairing areas impacted by the construction of fireline no longer needed. Area, road, and trail closures will remain in effect while heavy equipment completes suppression repair work. Examples of suppression repair work include road graders on Kilbrennan Lake Road, dump trucks and excavators moving logs cut to create fire breaks and general road maintenance such as clearing ditches of debris.

Firefighters on the South Yaak connected handline into previously constructed fireline and will continue to improve that line today. Crews continue to extinguish areas of remaining heat from the fire edge over 100 feet into the interior.

Weather:Today’s temperatures will be a high of 80-82 degrees with lows in the 20s and a chance of an evening shower. A warming and drying trend will appear this weekend. Breezy winds with gusts up to 10 mph arrive Saturday and continue into Sunday.

Closures: Please remember, the USFS Three Rivers Ranger District has several area, road, and trail closures for public safety due to fire management activities related to the Burnt Peak and South Yaak Fires. Closure orders and maps may be viewed on the Kootenai National Forest webpage at

COVID-19: Daily screening, masking, and social distancing protocols are in place at the Incident Command Post.
