REDDING, Calif, March 30, 2021— The Shasta-Trinity National Forest is preparing to initiate prescribed fire activities within the Weaverville Community Forest (WCF) on National Forest System lands in Weaverville, California. The WCF Phase 1 project includes a target of approximately 150 acres of prescribed fire underburn operations planned for this spring. Prescribed burning could begin as early as April 2.
The main goals of the project are to reduce the severity of future wildfires and provide added protection for communities in the wildland urban interface. Actual project initiation dates will depend upon local weather and fuel conditions.
Fire crews will hand ignite areas near East Weaver Creek Campground, Airport road, Jackass Ridge, and West Weaver Creek. The following WCF trails may be utilized by firefighters during operations: East Weaver Creek, Howe Ditch, Day Ranch, Rainbow Hansen, Jackass, and McKenzie Gulch spur.
Smoke from the project will be visible from many areas around Weaverville. Residual smoke may be visible for several days and project managers will work with the North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District to ensure compliance with air quality regulations and health and safety conditions.
Pre-ignition public notifications will be provided to local media outlets and will also be posted on https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/7268/, the Forest’s Facebook www.facebook.com/ShastaTrinityNF and Twitter www.twitter.com/ShastaTrinityNF pages. For more information, please call the Weaverville District Office at (530) 623-2121 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday (closed on federal holidays.)
