East Canyon Fire Update
June 16, 2020 - 6:00 PM
Fire behavior was more moderate today than expected. High winds did materialize and limited the use of the fixed wing aircraft but they did not cause the erratic fire behavior seen over the past two days.
Firefighters are currently working to contain a small spot fire to the east of Cherry Creek Road (County Road 105). The Single Engine Air Tankers (SEATs) are assisting ground firefighters with retardant drops as needed.
Fire personnel completed dozer line along the northwest side of the fire. Containment is now estimated at 5%. There has not yet been another infrared flight to provide an updated acreage.
In mid-afternoon some resources were diverted to a new fire start near Bondad, along Highway 550 between Durango and Aztec, NM in hopes of catching that fire while it was small.
The Type 2 Rocky Mountain Blue Team will assume command of the fire at 8 PM.
