Miller Gulch Fire Update September 3, 2019

Breezy and warm, dry weather over the weekend has grown the Miller Gulch Fire to 145 acres. Fire behavior is minimal to moderate, primarily creeping, backing and smoldering on the forest floor in heavy dead and downed fuels. The fire is slowly moving east and northeast up the prominent ridgeline in the area. At the top of the ridge line, the fire is smoldering with very little activity and fire movement toward the east side of the ridgeline. Firefighters continue to utilize a confine and contain suppression strategy utilizing natural barriers such as cliff bands, prescribed burn areas, and previous burned areas. The fire continues to be patrolled from the air and an engine is patrolling the Miller Flats area daily. A Type 1 helicopter remains assigned to the fire and is used as needed to wet and check fire spread. The weather forecast is expected to be warm, dry and breezy for the next few days. On breezy days, there is potential for the public to see smoke from certain areas of the Rock Creek drainage; however, smoke is primarily moving to the east and north. Occasionally, smoke settles in the Rock Creek drainage overnight and disperses in the morning. The Miller Gulch Fire will likely smolder until a season-ending event occurs. Information is being posted at campgrounds and prominent locations along the Rock Creek Road Corridor, and will be updated as fire activity merits.
