Fire Summary:Containment on the Milepost 97 Fire has reached 55 percent. The size of the fire remains 13,119 acres. Mop up operations will continue over the next several days. All evacuation level notifications have been lifted. While no evacuation levels are in effect, southern Oregon residents are encouraged to “be ready” (level 1) throughout the course of fire season, as fire can strike and threaten communities anytime during the heat of the summer.
While weather forecasters are predicting calmer conditions today, fire-fighters can still expect temperatures and humidity to be hotter and drier than normal respectively.Today marks the 70th anniversary of 1949’s Man Gulch Fire that took the lives of seven smokejumpers. As we look back on this tragic event, we ask that everyone keep all firefighters in their thoughts during this fire season.
Finally, the Milepost 97 Fire was started by an illegal campfire. Fire person-nel throughout Oregon continue to respond to abandoned campfires, ille-gal debris burn piles and residents using power equipment in areas where these activities are prohibited or restricted due to fire danger. Please, as we approach Smokey Bear’s birthday on August 9, do your part to prevent the next fire from starting.
Cooperators assisting partner agencies ODF, DFPA and BLM on the fire in-clude the U.S. Forest Service, Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, Roseburg Resources, Silver Butte Resources, Lone Rock Timber, Williams Pipeline, Douglas County, Oregon State Police and Oregon Department of Transportation.
