News – 6/22/2019

Woodbury Fire Personnel Perform Successful Firing Operations

Firing operations were conducted last night along the Highway 188 corridor from Roosevelt to Spring Creek to limit fire spread should it progress further northeast. The line is holding well. Additional firing occurred at Tonto National Monument ahead of the advancing wildfire as a precautionary measure. Today, Tonto National Monument reports no apparent damage to the Lower and Upper Cliff Dwellings, and other structures. This success is attributed to quality coordination between the National Park Service staff and the Incident Management Team.

The Woodbury Fire has been less active today than in recent days. Minimal fire growth allowed the construction of direct fireline by hotshot crews.

On the far east side of the fire, slower fire progression was observed. The fire continues to produce smoke, but is not actively moving on the landscape. The southeast side of the fire where retardant has been dropped along Sawtooth Ridge continues to hold. Crews continue to perform structure protection around the community of Top of the World, Pinto Valley Mine, Carlota Mine, and other infrastructure.

Crews actively patrol the northern perimeter to keep the fire south of State Highway 188. The southwestern perimeter of the fire closest to Apache Junction, Queen Valley, and Gold Canyon has not made any movement for several days. Fire personnel continue to monitor this area for any potential fire progression.
