Who: San Jacinto Ranger District, San Bernardino National Forest, U.S. Forest Service
What: Fire crews will return to Thomas Mountain for another year of prescribed burning to create community-scale defensible space and promote forest health. Due to the terrain and accessibility of this year’s burn unit, a low-flying helicopter may be used for ignitions in coordination with ground crews. The burn unit is 1,074 acres, but only 30 to 70 percent will be treated in a mosaic pattern to create age diversity among the vegetation.
Crews will only move forward each day when weather conditions are safe for burning. Personnel will remain on site 24 hours/day during operations.
Where: Northeast slope of Thomas Mountain (Garner Valley side)
When: Potentially beginning March 25 and periodically continuing for the next month.
