8.1.21 UPDATE: PF FIRE
Formerly referred to as the Poverty Flats Fire
Montana Dept. of Natural Resources & Conservation (DNRC)’s County Assist Team (CAT) Summary: The DNRC’s County Assist Team (CAT) was briefed by local authorities yesterday and assumed management of the PF Fire at 6:00 AM on Sunday, August 1. The fire is 65,941 acres and located in Big Horn County and on the Crow Reservation. The PF Fire was first reported on Tuesday, July 27 at 1:30 PM and is located east of the Bighorn River, about ten miles northeast of Hardin. The fire is burning in grass, sage brush, and cottonwood trees along the river.
Crews will work today to strengthen and improve fire line to reduce the risk of the fire escaping the perimeter. They will extinguish hot spots along the fire’s edge and inward (mop up). Firefighters will be working diligently along the river bottoms to ensure flare-ups are put out and hazard trees are cut. A main power transmission line was burned and crews are working to restore power to the affected area. A spike camp is located near Dunmore to support the protection of structures in that area. The fire has not grown in size since early Saturday morning.
Incident Objectives:1) Base all actions reflecting a commitment to firefighter and public safety. 2) Treat everyone with respect. 3) Protect infrastructure, threatened structures, agricultural, archaeological, and cultural resources. 4) Ensure communications that foster positive interaction with local cooperators, private landowners, public citizens, tribal government, and agency administrators. 5) Manage fire with full suppression perimeter control and a mop up objective of three-chains from control lines. 5) Limit the spread of noxious and invasive weeds.
