Ryan Fire Update - 9/23/2018

Ryan Fire Wildfire
News – 9/23/2018

Ryan Fire Very Active Saturday; Expected to Continue

Current Situation: The fire had very little overnight humidity recovery Friday, and as a result became very active on the east/northeast side early Saturday. Spotting was observed by mid-morning. Even with the localized Red Flag Warning, the spread was influenced more by the fuel type (beetle-killed trees) and terrain than the wind. The firefighters activated the structure protection plan at Jerry Park. Firefighters on the western side of the fire finished up point protection at the Hogpark Guard Station.

The Ryan fire grew approximately 5,699 acres on Saturday for a total of 8,685 acres. Fire activity continued overnight and Carbon County firefighters worked through the night on the northeast side to protect private property and structures.

Due to the weather and fuel type, Sunday is expected to be another day of active fire behavior with long distance spotting and high rates of spread. Despite significant growth on the Ryan Fire on Saturday, fire managers remain focused on protecting identified values without exposing firefighters to exceptional risk. Resources will be assigned to evaluate any additional structure protection measures that may need to be put in place as the fire continues to grow.

Weather: On Sunday another localized Red Flag Warning will occur from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Temperatures will be in the lower 70s with a minimum relative humidity value of 12 percent. Breezy west to southwest winds, with gusts of 35 mph along the ridgetops, are predicted. Isolated rain showers will be possible overnight and into early Monday, though wetting rains are unlikely.

Closures and Public Safety: An updated area closure was issued on Saturday for National Forest System lands surrounding the Ryan Fire to ensure the protection of the public and fire personnel, and will remain in effect until rescinded. The current closure order along with the map is posted on InciWeb and social media. The interactive hunting map has been updated to include the new area closure as well. This closure is on portions of both the Medicine Bow and Routt National Forests. The Ryan Fire area closure will primarily affect hunters with licenses in game management unit 161 in Colorado, as well as elk area 13 and deer area 81 in Wyoming. Hunters are encouraged to obtain a copy of the area closure map before heading into the field. The complete closure order (MBRTB-2018-265) and map are available on the Ryan Fire InciWeb page (https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/6210/).
