The Bald Mountain Fire has constructed a Mobile Retardant Base to supply the helicopters dropping retardant on hot spots within and around the fire. The retardant powder in the white barrels is added to the mobile mixing tank and combined with water. This red retardant is then pumped to 8,000 gallon tanks that are accessible to helicopters. This Mobile Retardant Base is a quick system to supply retardant during wildfire incidents.
Fire retardant is a concentrated liquid that slows the fire by coating the vegetation with nonflammable material that evaporates at a slower rate than straight water. It acts like a natural fertilizer and is not harmful to the environment. The amount of retardant each helicopter holds depends on the air temperature and elevation of the site. This retardant is being placed around areas on the fire to slow the fire progression and help firefighters with suppression efforts.
