Fire Situation: The Whaleback fire is located on Whaleback Mountain, west of Eagle Lake, in the Brockman Flat Lava Beds. Fire suppression activities are being directed by Northern California Interagency Incident Management Team 1, under a unified command between the Lassen National Forest and the CALFIRE Lassen-Modoc Unit.

Fire Start: Friday, July 27, 1:30 pm. Cause is under investigation.

Fire Size: Approximately 18,726 acres with 55% containment. Updated acreages based on data from an overnight infrared flight.

Location: West side of Eagle Lake about 20 miles northwest of Susanville, California.

Road Closures: Portions of County Roads A-1, 21 and 231 are closed in the vicinity of the fire.

Evacuations and Closures: The Bureau of Land Management and Lassen National Forest have temporarily closed public lands in the fire area to provide for public safety. Details for both closures are available at Spalding Tract is evacuated. Christie Campground, Christie day use area, Merrill Campground, West Eagle Campground, Eagle Campground, Aspen Grove Campground, Gallatin Marina and Beach and Camp Ronald McDonald are closed to public use. An evacuation warning remains in effect for Buck’s Bay and Stones Landing.

Fire Behavior: Unfavorable weather predictions may continue to influence fire spread and spotting potential possibly compromising efforts of full containment. Fire crews continue to aggressively securing the fire area. Another Red Flag warning has been issued for today.

Resources Assigned:780 total personnel, including18 hand crews; 8 helicopters; 45 engines; 15 bulldozers; 18 water tenders.
