Bear Camp Road Closure

Klondike Fire Wildfire
Announcements – 8/28/2018

NEWS RELEASE: Bear Camp Road System Closed to Public: Rafting Traffic and Agness Residents Provided Exceptions

Effective immediately, August 28, 2018, the Bear Camp Road is closed to public travel due to Klondike Fire activity. Agency officials closed the road for the safety of both the public and fire personnel who continue their suppression efforts in the Indigo and Silver Creek drainages. Additionally, the road is being used as a contingency line if needed for the northern portion of the fire.

Bear Camp Road (Forest Road 23) is the most common route traveled for the shuttle drivers for Wild and Scenic Lower Rogue River visitors, providing a shorter alternative to the Highway 199-to-Highway 101 route. The current closure includes the Peavine Road system.

While the closure applies to the general public, exceptions for through traffic have been provided for the following:
• Residents of Agness and Galice, Oregon, may continue to use the road to access their residences and will be asked to provide photo identification at checkpoints.
• Traffic associated with recreational activities on the Wild portion of the Wild and Scenic Lower Rogue River is allowed to continue using Bear Camp Road. This includes commercial fishing and rafting guides, noncommercial boaters and rafters, and shuttle services. A copy of the river permit or special use authorization will be required at checkpoints, and will be provided by the Smullin Visitor Center in Rand when boaters pick up their permit. Questions about this can be directed to the Smullin Visitor Center at (541) 479-3735.

Both the Forest Service and the BLM recognize the economic impact of the 2018 wildfires to the businesses and local communities of southwest Oregon, and are making efforts to alleviate those impacts where it is safe and prudent to do so. Additionally, as fire suppression efforts continue, agencies are working diligently to re-open areas as soon as safely possible to minimize socioeconomic impacts.

The Oregon Air National Guard is stationed at both the east and west ends of the road to enforce the closure, the details of which were agreed upon by the RRSNF, the Medford District BLM, and County Sheriffs from Josephine and Curry Counties. The closure will be in effect until the Klondike fire status changes. If evacuation status of Agness changes to a level 3 (GO!), Bear Camp road will close to all public vehicle traffic and the road will be reopened to all public traffic when it is no longer needed for fire operations.
