Hwy 37 Fire Update July 20, 2018
Fire size is estimated to be 40-60 acres.
Dozer line is being constructed across the top of the fire perimeter and down the flanks to reach the highway.
Firefighters are currently improving the west flank line and plumbing hoses along both sides.
There is minimal fire spread at this time. We still have a high potential for rollout due to steep terrain.
The Forest Service is taking extra measures to ensure employee health and safety from potential asbestos exposure in the Modified Fire Response Zone, shown on the Highway 37 Map in the Map link at the top of this page.
Extra measures include personal protective equipment for firefighters to protect against potential exposure to asbestos contaminated dust and ash during ground based firefighting, which includes inherently dust generating activities.
Within the Modified Fire Response Zone, firefighters wear personal protective equipment while on the fire perimeter but not during any other firefighting activities such as hiking or driving to the fire. Additionally, indirect fireline can be constructed as in normal operations and without additional personal protective equipment restrictions.
Decontamination procedures are required following firefighting activities within Modified Fire Response Zone. Protocols include decontamination of equipment and supplies, including heavy equipment, chainsaws, packs and a washing station for personnel.
The USFS is taking extra precautions within the Modified Fire Response Zone until further employee health and safety data is gathered.
