Ferguson Fire PM Update July 18, 2018

Ferguson Fire Wildfire
News – 7/18/2018

As expected, hot and dry conditions persisted throughout the day. While the smoke lifted early, it re-settled in the late afternoon, again hampering visibility and grounding aircraft. Some thunderstorms were observed on the east side of the Sierra Nevada, but they had little effect on the fires growth. The fire continued to expand southeasterly. As of 6:00 P.M., no structures have been reported damaged or destroyed by the Ferguson Fire.

Firefighters continued working today to build handline Southeast from the main fork of the Merced River along Henness Ridge to prevent fire spread toward the community of Yosemite West. They were able to tie that line into those being constructed from the Wawona Road. Crews reinforced lines around structures in Jerseydale/Mariposa Pines, and conducted suppression actions to secure lines to the west and south of the community. The fire continues to back slowly north on Ferguson Ridge, and down into Sweetwater Creek. Handline has been completed along the top of Sweetwater Ridge. Fire crews were successful completing containment lines from west of Indian Flat to wast of Cedar Lodge, and crews have worked to control fire spread along Cold Creek. The fire is expected to continue to move east across the slope through the night.

Tonight, crews will continue to reinforce lines along Sweetwater Ridge and to strengthen and improve dozer and handlines constructed during the day.

Monsoonal moisture is expected to continue to move through the area for the next few days, bringing a potential for afternoon thunderstorms and gusty, erratic winds.

The South Central Sierra Incident Management Team will transition management of the Ferguson Fire to California Team 4, a Type 1 Incident Management Team, at 6:00 A.M. on Thursday, July 19, 2018.
