Summary: Structure protection specialists continue to patrol repopulated areas. Smoke could be seen inside the fire perimeter as remaining islands of vegetation were consumed. The western edge of the fire showed less intensity and crews were able to take a more direct attack along the fire edge while structure protection specialists continued working to secure houses west of County Road 572.
Weather: Temperatures today will be in the mid-seventies to mid-eighties. Winds will be out of the southwest in the morning, but change to southeast as the day progresses. Isolated thunderstorms, strong gusty winds and lightning are possible in the afternoon.
Current Situation: Firefighters will be conducting ongoing operations while emergency crews work to restore power and essential services to the area. While traveling through the area, please slow down when driving, remain attentive, and use caution around crews so they can safely do their work. Residents should be aware that smoke will remain as interior areas continue to burn.
Active fire can be seen in the area south of Red Wing and west of County Road 572. Felling operations on the western edge remain active, while structure protection specialists continue to evaluate needs and resources for this area. The Sterns Gulch area remains a tactical challenge for firefighters, and a combination of air and ground resources are being used to suppress fire in this region.
While areas of the fire remain active, other areas of the fire are being evaluated for rehabilitation. Specialists are on site to begin determining the best course of action for long term environmental recovery.
