The 416 Fire was called in Friday, AM. The fire began 10 miles North of Durango, CO.Current acreage is estimated to be 1100 acres. The fire started in the right of way on the west side of State Highway 550 and is now on the San Juan National Forest.
Today’s operations will focus on protecting neighborhoods and threatened infrastructure and quickly extinguishing any spot fires. Firefighters will work along U.S. Highway 550 to keep the fire from crossing the highway. U.S. Highway 550 remains closed between mile markers 34 and 48. County Road 250 is closed to north and southbound traffic.
Resources include four heavy tankers, one SEAT, 1 VLAT, two type 2 Helicopters, 2 type 1 Helicopters, 12 engines, five firefighting crew and three hotshot crews.
Evacuations: Residents from Baker’s Bridge at County Road 250 north to Electra Lake Road are under mandatory evacuation orders. This affects approximately 825 residential structures. Residents from north Electra Lake to Meadow View Drive are under pre-evacuation notice. This includes Purgatory, Durango Mountain Resort, Cascade Village, Celadon, Red Tail Mountain Ranch, and Elkhorn Mountain subdivisions. This affects approximately 760 residential structures. County Road 250 north from Baker’s Bridge is open to local traffic only both directions.
An evacuation center is open at Escalante Middle School at 141 Baker Lane in Durango; a second evacuation site will open at the Silverton School, 1160 Snowden St., in Silverton.
Evacuees are asked to check in either at Escalante Middle School or at Silverton Visitor Center, 414 Greene St., in Silverton, to receive resident credentials. These will be necessary for re-entry following the 416 Fire’s resolution.
Livestock can be evacuated to the La Plata County Fairgrounds at 2500 Main Avenue. The emergency call center at (970) 385-8700 can help coordinate pick-up of livestock. Small animals are being accepted at the La Plata County Humane Society, 1111 South Camino del Rio, Durango (970) 259-2847. The Discover Goodwill of Durango, 1230 Escalante Drive, is now accepting clothes and household donations. Financial donations can be made by calling the Community Foundation serving Southwest Colorado at (970) 375-5807, in the name of the Community Emergency Relief Fund.
