2017-10-24 6PM: Sawmilll Prescribed Burn earlier today, smoke impacts

Incident: Fall 2017 Prescribed Burns Prescribed Fire
Released: 10/24/2017

Smoke impacts are being reported in the Village of Oak Creek and Verde Valley tonight from the Sawmill prescribed burn project. Crews burned approximately 1200 acres in Mexican spotted owl habitat south of Mormon Lake, generating a large smoke plume that was visible from Flagstaff, Strawberry, I-40, I-17, and the surrounding area. Winds are from the northeast, and with evening cooling, smoke is settling into canyons and moving to the southwest into the Verde Valley area. Sedona and Happy Jack may also experience smoke impacts.

See last week's news release for more about the Sawmill Project.
