Fire Managers Announce Plans for Small Prescribed Burn

KNF-GRCA North Zone Fire Rx 2017-2018 Prescribed Fire
News – 11/29/2017

Fredonia, Ariz., Nov. 29, 2017 - For Immediate Release. North Zone Fire managers announced plans today to initiate prescribed fire operations on a small 50-acre strip of land adjacent to the campground at Jacob Lake. Weather conditions are forecasted to be within prescriptive parameters throughout the rest of the week; fire managers anticipate conducting a test fire as early as Friday.

The burn is expected to be completed within one day and is being conducted to “lessen the threat of a human-caused wildfire in and around the Jacob Lake area” said Acting North Zone Fire Management Officer Dave Robinson.

Meanwhile, crews will continue to monitor weather and fuels conditions throughout the winter and will transition to pile-burn operations when conditions are determined safe and suitable to do so.

Smoke and Safety: Light winds are forecasted from the southwest over the next 48 to 72 hours, which should produce minimal smoke impacts to the northeast. However, fire managers caution motorists to use caution while driving in areas where fire personnel is working, to operate vehicles with headlights on and to avoid stopping in areas where firefighters are operating.

As a reminder, all prescribed burning is subject to approval by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and appropriate weather conditions. For additional information on the Smoke Management Division of the ADEQ and to view prescribed burns authorized on any given day, please visit
