EAST CRATER FIRE INFORMATION: 509 395-3402 (please note new phone number)
East Crater Fire (Indian Heaven Wilderness), Mount Adams Ranger District, Gifford Pinchot National Forest
As of Monday, Sept. 18th work continues on fire suppression repairs on the fire line along Forest Road 6035 east of the Indian Heaven Wilderness boundary. This road will remain a functional fire line. As fire conditions have changed due to cooler, wetter weather fire resources have been released to return home or to other assignments.
Significant precipitation arrived in the area late Sunday afternoon and is expected to continue into Wednesday. This rain is anticipated to dramatically reduce fire activity. Nonetheless, this may not be a season ending event and warmer temperatures are likely to return, so the Forest will continue with containment efforts and be prepared to implement more aggressive fire suppression activities should they be necessary. Smoke from the fire will continue to be visible in the coming months until a season ending weather event.
As a result of wetter weather and reduced fire activity the East Crater Fire Area Closure has been amended. Indian Heaven Wilderness will remain closed for public safety and a small area east of the Wilderness boundary will remain closed until containment lines are no longer necessary.
FIRE CLOSURES: The new area closure in effect for the East Crater Fire prohibits entry to the Indian Heaven Wilderness and an adjacent area east of the Wilderness. Hikers are advised that the Pacific Crest Trail within the Indian Heaven Wilderness remains closed. Fire and Smoking Restrictions (Burn Ban)has been rescinded.
The new East Crater Fire Area Closure will remain in effect until further notice.
