FIRE UPDATE: Sunday, September 17, 2017 at 10:00 am

EAST CRATER FIRE INFORMATION: 509 395-3360 (effective Monday please call 509 395 3402)

East Crater Fire (Indian Heaven Wilderness), Mount Adams Ranger District, Gifford Pinchot National Forest

EAST CRATER FIRE: Yesterday fallers completed work dropping snags along the fire line on Forest Road 6035 east of the wilderness area, reducing hazards along that corridor. Today hose lays will be removed from the fire’s edge where threats to the containment line have diminished. Heavy equipment operators will be conducting some suppression repair along the Forest Road 6035 fire line, including cleaning culvert inlets. As this work is completed resources will be released to return home or to other assignments.

A significant precipitation event is forecast to occur late Sunday afternoon and continuing into the week which is anticipated to dramatically reduce fire activity. Nonetheless, this may not be a season ending event and warmer temperatures may return, so the Forest will continue with containment efforts and be prepared to implement more aggressive fire suppression activities should they be necessary.

While the fire perimeter encompasses an area of nearly 500 acres, burn intensity has been varied across the fire. As a result, a mosaic of forest conditions have been left behind; some areas where most vegetation has been burned and some areas where very little was burned, which result in a more fire resilient landscape.

FIRE CLOSURES: An area closure remains in effect for the East Crater Fire prohibiting entry to the Indian Heaven Wilderness and adjacent area. Hikers are advised that a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail within the Indian Heaven Wilderness remains closed. Nearby campgrounds are also closed. For East Crater Fire Area Closure details see:

FIRE AND SMOKING RESTRICTIONS (BURN BAN): All open fires and smoking outside of enclosed vehicles or buildings are banned on all National Forest System Lands within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Pressurized gas stoves and pressurized gas fire rings are permitted. For details on the Forest Closure and Fire Restrictions please visit:

The Area Closure and Fire Restrictions will be reviewed early this week and evaluated based upon the weekend precipitation, forecasted weather and fire conditions.
