Weather: A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 12 pm to 12 am today. Critical fire weather conditions are expected this afternoon for warm temperatures, clear skies, critically low humidity and breezy southwest winds. A cold front will cross the area tonight bringing in cooler air and cloud cover for Wednesday. Showers are likely on Thursday.

West Fork Fire Yesterday: Fire continued to back down to the Quartz Creek Road where engine crews were patrolling and extinguishing hotspots that have crossed the road. Logging equipment was moved from the Quartz Creek Road to the Pipe Creek Road. CL-415 Super Scooper aircraft worked on the north end of the fire near Mount Tom where the fire was very active yesterday evening. The Scoopers had a 9 minute turn-around time from Lake Koocanusa to the fire.

Today’s Planned Actions: Active fire behavior is expected in all areas of the fire. The Boise Hotshot crew arrived yesterday and will split into two modules; one working in the Pipe Creek area and the other working on the Moose Peak Fire. The logging equipment will continue to work on the east side of the fire improving the roads and fireline. Logs will be decked instead of hauling them to increase line construction efficiency. Structure assessments will continue on all residences in the West Fork Fire area.

Moose Peak Yesterday: Growth was minimal on the west flank of the fire despite active burning until 10:30 last night. Fire continues to back slowly downhill to the east in the Fishtrap Creek area. Crews patrolled and monitored the fireline from Miller Lake to Fisher Creek. The primary containment line is almost complete on the north side of the fire from Miller Lake east to Fishtrap Road. Helicopters provided water drops to assist the firefighters in this area to slow the fire’s growth to the north.

Today’s Planned Actions: The north containment line should be completed today and division supervisors will scout areas where a containment line may be constructed closer to the active fire. The fire will want to move to the north and east with the wind conditions today. Crews will be prepared to hold the established firelines where it is safe to do so. Helicopter will continue to assist ground crews as visibility allows.
