Burn Out Operations Near Herman Creek and Shellrock Mountain

Incident: Eagle Creek Fire Wildfire
Released: 9/14/2017

Burn out operations are beginning between Herman Creek and Shellrock Mountain. We'll be using aerial ignition, a tactic used in burn operations when it is unsafe to put firefighters on the ground. Plastic Spherical Dispenser (PSD) balls (about the size of ping pong balls) are injected with an oxidizing agent and ethylene glycol-based antifreeze that causes an exothermic chemical reaction at the time of release. This process provides a reliable auto-ignition with a consistent time delay, allowing the PSDs to reach the ground before ignition. In addition to helping keep our firefighters safe, PSDs are a valuable tool to straighten edges of a fire, provide additional depth in specific areas and are great for steep country where we want fire to back down slopes with low intensity. #EagleCreekFire
