FIRE UPDATE

Stone Lake Fire

August 31, 2017 10:00 a.m. Contact: Wisdom Ranger District (406) 689-3243 M-F 8:00 – 4:30

What: Wildland Fire

Detected: August 27, 2017, 2:00 p.m.

Cause: Lightning

Current Size: Approximately 8 acres

Containment: 70%

Resources on Fire: 5 Smokejumpers and local 6 Wisdom/Wise River firefighters

Location: N 45˚41.865 W 113˚16.230

Approximately 15 miles SW of Wise River, MT

The Stone Lake fire was detected at aproximately 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 27, 2017. This fire

Is located high on the ridge in Whitebark Pine with rock screes nearby. Today firefighters will continue

to mop up, scout and extinguish all spots outside of the main fire perimeter. Water bucket drops will be

available if needed and visibility allows for arial support.

Elbow Lake and Elbow Lake #2 Fires

What: Wildland Fire

Detected: August 29, 2017, 9:00 p.m.

Cause: Lightning

Current Size: Approximately 1 acre

Containment: 40%

Resources on Fire: 5 Wisdom/Wise River firefighters, 1 Smoke jumper, 2 Helicopters

Location: N 45˚35.22 W 113˚16.46 Elbow Lake (1 acre)

N 45˚35.37 W 113˚14.37 Elbow Lake #2 (1/10 acre)

The Elbow Lake fire was detected Tuesday night at 11:30 p.m., August 29, 2017. The Elbow Lake #2 fire was detected August 30, 2017. Located about ¼ mile from the original start this fire was a separate lightning strike. A total of 8 Wisdom/Wise River firefighters are digging hand line and scouting for possible spots. Both fires will be assisted with water drops if needed and aircraft has good visibility.

Weather

Red Flag Warning has been extended to Friday evening at 9:00 p.m. The main impact from storms that develop will be gusty outflow winds, possibly gusting to 40-50 mph and lightning. Rainfall will be limited with most storms.

Fire Restrictions

The Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest also modified Stage 1 Fire Restrictions to prohibit ALL campfires and charcoal grills. These restrictions are effective September 2, 2017, at 12:01 a.m. MDT.
