BOISE, Idaho – Continued cooler weather at the higher elevations of the Bearskin Fire has reduced fire activity significantly. Crews who had been fighting the fire found themselves battling cold weather yesterday as daytime temperatures hovered around the low 40s.

Despite the cold, they continued to implement the confinement strategy chosen to manage the fire. On the north side, crews monitored the area around Deadwood Lodge where defensive firing operations had taken place earlier this week. On the south side, work to remove snags near Deadwood Reservoir was completed and chipping work along the NFS road 555 road was finished as well.

Saturday’s plan is to conduct cleanup and suppression repair: spreading chip piles, removing branches and other debris from ditches to restore drainage and smoothing out some of the dirt mounds and lines that were created to help contain the fire.

The fire area will be partly cloudy with 3 to 5 mph winds. The temporary flight restriction (TFR) over the fire area was canceled Friday. Private aircraft are able to use airspace previously closed.

The Bearskin Fire area closure on the Boise and Salmon Challis National Forest has been reduced significantly due to a decrease in fire activity. The change in the closure also opens more than 80,000 acres to fall hunters and recreationists. The modified closure went into effect Friday, Sept. 15, at noon. National Forest System Road 582 through Bear Valley, remains open except between the junctions of NFS roads 545 and 515 which is closed for culvert replacement. Work is expected to last into October.
